KGB Fantastic Fiction Reading (in-person)

Fantastic Fiction at KGB is a monthly speculative-fiction reading series held every month at the KGB Bar in Manhattan. Hosted by by Ellen Datlow and Matthew Kressel, it’s also available as a podcast, and on YouTube.

The monthly series, which has been running since the late 1990s, serves as a salon, where writers, editors, agents, and fans of science fiction, fantasy, and horror can co-mingle in a shared event space. Admission is always free, but donations are much appreciated to keep this event going.

I’ve been attending as a fan for years, and it’s so thrilling to be able to grace its renowned podium for the first time. Also reading that night is the excellent Cadwell Turnbull, which makes it an even bigger thrill. Hope to see you then!

The October lineup is pretty awesome, and well worth the trip; I’m reading alongside Amanda Brainerd, Triss Stein, and Sally Wiener Grotta.

I’m probably going to read from Escape Velocity, or if the mood strikes, I might read a short story? Remains to be seen.

Workshop: Blurring the Genre Lines of Speculative Fiction (virtual)

  • United States of America (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

After a successful run last November, I’m so excited to partner with the Asian American Writers’ Workshop once more for this genre-bending workshop! 🧝‍♂️🧑🏼‍🚀🧛🏽

It’s on Saturday, June 3 and Saturday, June 10, both at 2 PM to 5 PM Eastern Time. Here’s the course description:

This course is open to beginner and novice writers in any genre and any form (short or long) with an interest in writing fiction with speculative elements.

Keeping in theme with our workshop theme of understory, this workshop harkens to interspecies relationships by way of genre blurring, this course will introduce attendees to effective ways of blending the speculative fiction genres (science fiction, fantasy, and horror) and non-speculative genres such as domestic fiction, mysteries and thrillers, and romance.

This workshop will involve lectures about genre and subgenre definitions; works that successfully straddle genre lines; structural considerations and managing reader expectations when writing genre-blending works.

This workshop will also have a seminar and discussion component centering genre-blending short stories. Attendees will generate writings based on prompts during the workshop.

Finally, attendees will have the opportunity to submit their own writing (submitted in advance of the course) for feedback from the instructor and other attendees.

This two-day workshop is fully virtual, and has a small class size. The sliding scale fee is $100-$200, and scholarships are available. More details and registration information can be found at the course site here.

Hope you can join us!

* Limited scholarship seats are available and will be chosen by lottery. The deadline to apply for a scholarship seat is end of day May 29, 2023

** All AAWW workshops serve writers of the global majority (BIPOC). If you are not a person of the global majority, we ask you to refrain from signing up for this workshop.

Bag of Giving: DIE RPG Play (virtual)

The folks at Bag of Giving run one-shot TTRPG games for charity, featuring authors and creators. I’m a fan of their streams, and I’m so honored to be invited to participate in its second season.

On Monday, May 15, 2023, at 7:00 pm New York time, I’ll be playing DIE RPG, created by one of my fave comics writers, Kieron Gillen, and Stephanie Hans. The game is so rad, and I can’t wait to play it with my friends too, to take a break from DnD.

Anyway on the 15th, I’ll be playing with Bendi Barrett and dave ring, with Marty Cahill acting as GM. It’s going to be loads of fun, and I hope you can join us and donate!

Bag of Giving is hosted on Arvan Eleron’s Twitch channel at https://www.twitch.tv/arvaneleron.

2022 National Book Festival - Panel and Signing (in-person)

The 2022 Library of Congress National Book Festival returns to live audiences this Labor Day weekend for the first time in three years, bringing celebrities and cult favorites back to Washington for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down live events across the nation’s capital.

The one-day, all-day festival — Saturday, Sept. 3, from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. — will feature more than 120 authors, poets and writers under the theme of “Books Bring Us Together” at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

I’ll be on a panel and will be signing copies of THE SLEEPLESS, and I’ll be roaming the festival grounds all day. Catch me at the Washington Convention Center at these events:

10:00 - 11:00 am, Science Fiction & Fantasy stage, West Salon GHI (Street Level, South Building)

Panel: Memories, Maladies, Mysteries and Murders with Rob Hart

What do you do when you can’t trust your memories and people are dying? Keep looking for answers! In Rob Hart’s “The Paradox Hotel,” January Cole, security director at a time traveler hotel, finds a body no one can see, and in Victor Manibo’s debut, “The Sleepless,” journalist Jamie Vega is the main suspect for a suspicious suicide he’s investigating.

11:30 am - 12:30 pm, Hall C, Book Signing Line #4

Book Signing; copies of The Sleepless will be available for sale for those who don’t have their copy yet

City Lit Books: Meg Elison + Victor Manibo + Nino Cipri (in-person)

Join us for a talk with Meg Elison at a release event for Number One Fan! Meg will be joined in conversation by Nino Cipri and Victor Manibo. 9/1/22, 6:30 PM CT, in person.

She created a beautiful world. Now he wants it all.

On her way to a speaking engagement, bestselling novelist Eli Grey gets into a cab and accepts a drink from the driver, trusting that everything is fine. She wakes up chained in the stranger’s basement. With no close family or friends expecting her to check in, Eli knows she needs to save herself. She soon realizes that her abduction wasn’t random, and though she thinks she might recognize her captor, she can’t figure out what he wants. Her only clues are that he’s very familiar with her books and deeply invested in the fantastical world she creates. What follows is a test of wills as Eli pits herself against a man who believes she owes him everything—and is determined to take it from her.

Terrifying and timely, set against the backdrop of convention culture and the MeToo reckoning, Number One Fan unflinchingly examines the tension between creator and work, fandom and source material, and the rage of fans who feel they own fiction.

World Science Fiction Convention - Chicago

I will be in Chicago for the 80th WorldCon! This year’s convention is a hybrid of in-person and virtual events, though I will be there in person at the Hyatt Regency Chicago from September 1st to 5th.

I hope to see you there, and if you haven’t yet, registration is still open here.

Here is a rundown of my events over that long weekend:

Panel: Best SFF Murder Mysteries

Participants: Mark Painter; Lucy A. Synk; Rebecca Inch Partridge; Roberta Rogow; Victor Manibo

Description: The murder mystery is a classic plot structure, and has been written into SF settings many times, from classics such as Alfred Bester's "Fondly Fahrenheit" and Pat Cadigan's Tea From An Empty Cup to Tade Thompson's Far from The Light of Heaven. What are some of our favourite books in this genre? What books put a uniquely SFF twist on the locked room mystery or the unbreakable alibi, and use their setting to write mysteries that couldn't be written outside the genre?

Where/When: Grand Hall K; Thursday, September 1, 2022, 2:30 PM CDT

Panel: The State of Asian SFF

Participants: Gautam Bhatia; Aparna Verma; Claire Light/Jadie Jang; Neon Yang; Victor Manibo

Description: With permission from FIYAHCON, we continue the annual series on the State of Asian SFF—Where have we been? Where are we going? How do we get there? Asian authors, agents, filmmakers, and publishers speak to trends, challenges, and opportunities in science fiction and fantasy genres for Asian creatives.

Where/When: Airmeet 3 (virtual); Friday, September 2, 2022, 10:00 AM CDT

Panel: Writing Authority Figures: Military, Police, and Government

Participants: Victor Manibo; Alyx Dellamonica; Brandon Ketchum; Heshe Leontess; Jaime Garmendia

Description: The lives and duties of military personnel, police officers, and government officials vary wildly and come with real-world baggage that cannot be written away even in an imaginary setting. Complicating matters, when a writer doesn’t clearly define the unique rules and roles that authority figures fill in a society, the plot will blur and the story will remain unpolished. Learn how various branches of law enforcement, government, and military would realistically operate, what equipment and powers are likely available to them, and what community roles they may fill in regional societies and cultures in this world or in a speculative land.

Where/When: Grand Hall L; Sunday, September 4, 2022, 10:00 AM CDT

Panel: The Fantastic, Speculative, Science-Fictional City

Participants: Victor Manibo; Arkady Martine; Fran Wilde; Meg Elison; Micaiah Johnson

Description: Cities are essential parts of speculative fiction, from James Bliss's Cities in Flight to N.K. Jemisin's The City We Became, where the city itself is the main character. How has the city been used within the genre, and how has our approach to it changed? What's different about authors writing from within urban settings, as opposed to describing them from outside?

Where/When: Grand Hall MN; Sunday, September 4, 2022, 1:00 PM CDT

Panel: Life Extension in Fact and Fiction

Participants: Leonardo Espinoza Benavides; Dan Koboldt; K.G. Anderson; Victor Manibo

Description: How long could a human live? Forever or just a really, really, really long time? We'll discuss whether there are hard limits to how long a being who's made out of meat can last.

Where/When: Airmeet 1 (virtual); Sunday, September 4, 2022, 4:00 PM CDT

Reading: The Sleepless

Description: Victor Manibo will be reading from his debut science fiction noir novel, The Sleepless. He will sign copies of the book afterward.

Where/When: Roosevelt 1; Monday, September 5, 2022, 11:30 AM CDT
